Anti-abortion activists will have to stay at least 8 feet away from people
outside medical facilities in Chicago under a measure the City Council approved
Wednesday.
The so-called bubble zones will exist within 50 feet of the entrances to all
health care centers. Those who venture closer to another person without consent
could face a fine of $500.
Before the City Council voted 28-13 in favor, more than 100 people opposing the
ordinance circled City Hall's front doors. Many of them held small American
flags as they sang "Amazing Grace" and shouted "Praise God."

The measure's sponsor, Ald. Vi Daley, 43rd, said she pushed for the proposal
after complaints from officials of a Near North Side Planned Parenthood facility
where abortions are performed.

documentary, "Blood Money". This will be an eye opener for many on both sides of
the abortion debate. |

"To me, this is all about safety," she said. "Patients are being harassed." The
alderman, who is not related to Mayor Richard Daley, said lawyers for the city
helped draft the ordinance.
But supporters of the ordinance had to overcome a strong late campaign to defeat
it by anti-abortion activists, who cited free speech concerns.
"Pastors
from the community called, and they said they were against it, and I followed
their lead on it," said Ald. Ariel Reboyras, 30th, among the 13 council members
who voted against the plan.

Activist Nora Doherty said she counsels women out of abortions, meaning lost
revenue for clinic operators. "We're not aggressive," she said. "We're clever.
We're bad for business."
Peter
Breen, executive director of the Thomas More Society, said the organization will
sue the city if the mayor does not veto the ordinance. Many cities and states
have established similar restrictions since the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a
Colorado law in 2000.
It will be up to the Chicago Police Department to enforce the ordinance outside
clinics.

Standing outside a women's health
clinic Wednesday in Avondale, the Rev. Stephen Lesniewski said he plans to
continue trying to change women's minds on abortion. The priest at Immaculate
Conception Church in Brighton Park said he stands by a fence outside the clinic
two or three days a week and will move to another side of the parking lot if the
bubble zone takes effect.
The measure takes effect Nov. 17
Aldermen approved two other measures Wednesday whose enforcement will fall to
police, already busy battling violent crime: fines of up to $250 for owners of
incessantly barking dogs and $250 tickets for drivers of some diesel trucks who
let their vehicles idle for more than three minutes.

bill:
Everyone who is on Social
Security will be required to undergo a euthanasia counseling session every 5
years. This counseling session will educate the social security recipient on
ways to end their life so as not to become a burden to society and to their
family. Counselors will suggest and describe refusing nutrition, acceptance of
dehydration, refusal of medical care, etc. If diagnosed with a disease such as
Cancer during the 5 years between forced counseling sessions the patient will be
required to endure another counseling session before any treatment for their
condition will be permitted. You can be sure that harsh tactics will be used to
get the elderly to sign an authorization, or living will, of some form of
euthanasia. |
